Fibreglass insulation is the most cost effective way of insulating your attic. If you haven’t had your attic insulated in the last 5 to 10 years there is a strong possibility the attic is not up to current standards and would require a top up. The minimum requirement is currently 400mm or 16 inches of fibreglass on the ceiling space.
This depth should not be compromised in any way by being squashed or removed to accommodate attic storage as this will reduce thermal performance. The depth of the insulation combined with the quality of the product will determine how well your house will retain heat.
Fibreglass should be rolled in two layers where possible, first between joists then in the opposite direction over joists to avoid any heat escaping.
